India's central government said ethanol blending in petrol saved consumers roughly ₹30 per litre by keeping retail fuel prices lower [1].
The initiative serves as a critical buffer against volatile global energy markets. By reducing dependence on imported crude oil, the government aims to enhance national energy security and protect citizens from sudden price shocks at the pump.
According to the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, the benefits were most evident when global crude oil prices rose to approximately $135 per barrel [1]. During that period, the government maintained unchanged fuel prices for 75 days [1]. Without the integration of ethanol, officials said that petrol prices could have risen to about ₹125 per litre [3].
In Delhi, the impact of the E20 blend—which contains 20% ethanol—is reflected in current pricing. Some reports indicate the blend kept Delhi petrol at ₹94.77 per litre [5], while other data puts the E20 petrol price in the city at ₹102 per litre [4].
Beyond the immediate cost savings, the government is focusing on the long-term viability of the fuel transition. Testing has confirmed that E20 fuel is safe for use across more than 23 crore vehicles [7]. This technical validation allows the state to scale the blending program without risking widespread engine damage across the national fleet.
The shift toward ethanol is part of a broader strategy to mitigate the impact of high global crude prices. By substituting a portion of imported gasoline with domestically produced ethanol, India reduces the amount of foreign currency spent on energy imports, a move designed to stabilize the broader economy during periods of international market instability.

This strategy demonstrates India's shift toward a hybrid energy model to decouple domestic retail prices from the volatility of the Brent crude market. By leveraging agricultural ethanol, the government is attempting to transform a vulnerability—heavy import reliance—into a domestic economic driver that supports farmers while providing a fiscal cushion for urban commuters.
