Israeli forces conducted a series of airstrikes and raids on towns in the Saour district of southern Lebanon this week [1, 2].
These attacks underscore the escalating instability in southern Lebanon, where civilian infrastructure and residential areas are increasingly caught in the crossfire of military operations.
Reports on the casualties vary across sources. Anadolu Agency said that nine people were killed [2, 4], while another report from the same agency specifically attributed nine deaths to a Sunday raid [4]. Other accounts provided a lower count, with MSN reporting five deaths [5] and SANA reporting two [1]. Additionally, eight people were injured during the operations [3].
The strikes targeted several locations within the district. SANA said attacks hit the town of Shahour [1], while Anadolu Agency identified the towns of Al-Haniya and Jouya as targets [2, 4].
The military activity also impacted critical infrastructure. An attack caused damage to the Italian Hospital in Saour [5].
The operations occurred over several days earlier this month. Reports date the attacks to Monday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday [1, 3, 4].
“Nine people killed”
The discrepancy in casualty figures and target locations highlights the difficulty of verifying real-time data in active conflict zones. The targeting of a medical facility, specifically the Italian Hospital, may draw international scrutiny regarding the protection of healthcare infrastructure under international humanitarian law.
