John Lithgow discussed his casting as Albus Dumbledore in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
The appearance highlights Lithgow's transition into one of the most iconic roles in fantasy television while he continues to achieve critical success on the Broadway stage.
Lithgow appeared on the New York City-based program to promote his seventh Tony nomination [1] for the play Giant. The production of Giant had a Broadway run from 2024 to 2025 [2]. During the interview, the actor also reminisced about his previous voice work as Lord Farquaad in the first Shrek film.
Regarding his new role, Lithgow said, "I'm excited to bring Dumbledore to a new generation on HBO" [3]. The series is planned to start in 2027 [4].
However, the casting process was not without tension. Lithgow previously said that he almost walked away from the series because of the backlash [5] surrounding the project. This friction appears linked to the public discourse regarding the original author's views. Lithgow said, "JK Rowling's trans views have been twisted and misrepresented" [6].
Despite the controversy, Lithgow remains attached to the project as HBO prepares to reboot the wizarding world for a new audience.
“"I'm excited to bring Dumbledore to a new generation on HBO."”
Lithgow's decision to stay with the HBO series despite initial hesitation suggests that the production has significant momentum and industry support. By defending the author while acknowledging the backlash, Lithgow is attempting to navigate the complex intersection of artistic legacy and modern social discourse before the show's 2027 debut.
