Kothari Industries has inaugurated a new non-leather footwear manufacturing facility in the Karur District of Tamil Nadu to produce shoes for Adidas [1].
The project represents a significant expansion of the Adidas supply chain within India. By shifting production to a local facility, the company aims to increase regional investment and create a substantial number of industrial jobs in the state.
J Rafiq Ahmed, Chairman of Kothari Industries, said the facility is dedicated to the brand. "This is a manufacturing facility for Adidas," Ahmed said [1].
The current phase of the project involves an investment of up to 850 crore INR [1]. This financial commitment is intended to establish the infrastructure necessary for high-volume, non-leather footwear production, a sector that aligns with growing global demands for synthetic materials.
The plant is expected to provide immediate economic relief and opportunity to the local workforce. Ahmed said the company expects to employ 6,750 people directly during this initial phase [1].
Future projections suggest the impact on the regional labor market will grow as the facility expands. Projections indicate that employment could eventually reach 13,000 people [1].
This development marks a strategic move for Kothari Industries to integrate with global athletic brands. The focus on non-leather materials suggests a shift in manufacturing priorities to meet specific product line requirements for the Adidas brand [1].
“This is a manufacturing facility for Adidas.”
The establishment of this plant signals a strategic pivot toward localized manufacturing for global brands in India. By focusing on non-leather footwear, Kothari Industries is positioning itself to capture the growing market for synthetic athletic wear while leveraging Tamil Nadu's industrial infrastructure to reduce supply chain dependencies on imports.
