Actor Masahiro Matsuoka is starring as the protagonist in the new play "Hagaki no Ousama," which is currently running in Tokyo [1].

For Matsuoka, a former member of the pop group TOKIO [2], the production represents the fulfillment of a lifelong personal ambition. Performing at the historic Honda Theatre in Shimokitazawa is a milestone for the actor, who has viewed the venue as a pinnacle of performance since his youth.

"I have come to see [plays] here since I was a kid, and I always thought that I wanted to stand on this stage someday," Matsuoka said [3].

The production began its run on May 14 and is scheduled to continue through May 30, 2026 [1]. In addition to the Tokyo engagement, the play will also be staged in Osaka [4].

Matsuoka expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the production, noting that the role allowed him to achieve a long-held wish. The Honda Theatre is widely regarded as a significant venue for theatrical arts in the Shimokitazawa district, a hub for indie performance and creativity in Tokyo.

"I was truly happy to receive this offer. My long-cherished wish has finally come true," Matsuoka said [3].

The actor's transition from a pop idol to a leading stage protagonist reflects his ongoing development within the Japanese entertainment industry. By securing a lead role at a venue he admired as a child, Matsuoka has bridged the gap between his early inspirations and his professional reality.

"I have come to see [plays] here since I was a kid, and I always thought that I wanted to stand on this stage someday,"

Matsuoka's performance at the Honda Theatre signals his continued pivot toward serious dramatic acting following his tenure with TOKIO. The Honda Theatre's reputation as a prestigious venue for theater practitioners makes this a strategic career move, elevating his profile from a celebrity performer to a legitimate stage actor in the eyes of the Tokyo theater community.
