Philadelphia police are searching for an unidentified man who chased and threatened a jogger while wearing a Chucky-style Halloween mask.
The incident has raised safety concerns in the downtown area after the suspect targeted random pedestrians in a high-traffic zone near City Hall.
The encounters occurred during the early morning hours of Aug. 12, 2024 [2, 4]. The primary victim, a 40-year-old female jogger [6], was accosted and chased by the masked individual [1, 3]. During the pursuit, the man asked the woman, "Are you ready to die?" [1].
Police said the suspect did not only target the jogger but harassed at least six other people [1] in the vicinity of City Hall [2, 5]. Authorities said the man appeared to be trying to scare or terrorize random people [2, 4].
The Philadelphia Police Department said the man is wanted for assault after harassing multiple people [3]. However, other reports describe the suspect as being sought for harassment and threats without specifying a formal assault charge [4].
Investigators are using surveillance and witness accounts to identify the man. A Philadelphia Police spokesperson said, "We are asking anyone with information to come forward" [5].
The suspect remains at large. Police have not released a formal description of the man's physical appearance beyond the mask, although some reports suggest the suspect may be a Black man [7].
“"Are you ready to die?"”
This incident highlights the challenges of urban policing when suspects use disguises to commit crimes in broad daylight or early morning hours. The discrepancy in charges—ranging from harassment to assault—suggests that investigators are still determining the legal threshold of the suspect's physical actions during the pursuits.
