People Power Party floor leader Jung Jeom-sik warned party members that recent gains in public support are not the result of the party's own success.
This caution comes as the party navigates internal debates following local elections. By attributing the support to public demand for government checks and balances, Jung is attempting to prevent complacency and push for structural reform within the conservative bloc.
Jung presided over the supreme council meeting while party representative Jang Dong-hyuk remained hospitalized for five days [1]. During the session, Jung addressed the recent rise in party approval ratings and the outcomes of the local elections. He said, "It is not that we did well."
Jung argued that the results should be viewed as a mandate for change. He said, "It was not a victory for the ruling party or the opposition, but a victory for the wise public."
According to Jung, the current political climate represents a "command for conservative reform." This perspective suggests that voters are seeking a shift in how the party operates rather than endorsing its current trajectory.
Representative Jang Dong-hyuk had been involved in activities across 16 provinces and cities during the local election period [2]. His absence from the meeting due to hospitalization left Jung to manage the party's internal messaging and the direction of the supreme council.
Jung's remarks serve as a strategic move to calm internal disputes by shifting the focus from individual or party credit to the broader expectations of the electorate. He said that the party must respond to the public's demand for reform to maintain its momentum.
“"It is not that we did well."”
Jung Jeom-sik's rhetoric signals a strategic effort to pivot the party away from triumphalism and toward self-criticism. By framing the election results as a public demand for reform rather than a party achievement, he is attempting to create political leverage for internal restructuring and a more critical stance toward the current administration's performance.
