Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann (AAP) launched the Mukh Mantri Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojana to provide monthly financial assistance to women.

The initiative represents a significant shift in state welfare spending and aims to fulfill a key election promise by the Aam Aadmi Party. By providing direct cash transfers, the government seeks to increase the financial autonomy of women across the state.

The scheme provides Rs 1,000 [1] per month to eligible women. The government announced the program on June 5, 2024 [2], with the first payments scheduled to begin in July 2024 [3].

Chief Minister Mann and AAP leader Manish Sisodia held the launch ceremony in Dhuri, located in the Sangrur district. The program is designed as a "respect mothers-daughters" initiative intended to empower 97% [4] of the women in Punjab.

While the government emphasizes empowerment, opposition leaders have questioned the timing of the rollout. Some beneficiaries have also reported facing registration hurdles as the state attempts to implement the system across its various districts.

The administration intends for the monthly stipend to serve as a consistent support mechanism. The rollout follows a series of preparations reviewed by the Chief Minister to ensure the payment infrastructure could handle the volume of eligible recipients.

The scheme provides Rs 1,000 per month to eligible women.

The launch of the Mukh Mantri Mawan Dheeyan Satkar Yojana signals a strategic move by the AAP government to solidify its base among female voters through direct benefit transfers. By targeting nearly the entire female population, the state is implementing a universal basic income model at a micro-level, which may put long-term pressure on the state budget while potentially increasing the labor force participation or purchasing power of women in rural Punjab.
