Preparatory works for a new tramway line will begin June 19 [1] in the Saint-Roch district of Québec City.
These infrastructure changes are expected to cause major disruptions for residents and commuters along boulevard René-Lévesque. The project represents a significant shift in the city's transit landscape, altering one of its primary thoroughfares to accommodate the new rail system.
To facilitate the construction, the Ville de Québec reached confidential agreements with 32 property owners [2] regarding trees located along the boulevard. These agreements ensure the removal or relocation of greenery that would otherwise obstruct the tramway's path.
The timing of the works coincides with ongoing events at the Centre Vidéotron. The venue is hosting volleyball matches that will continue until this Sunday [1]. City officials have not detailed specific traffic diversions for the matches, but the upcoming construction window marks the start of a prolonged period of activity in the area.
The Saint-Roch district will serve as a primary focal point for these early phases. The preparatory stage involves site clearing, and utility adjustments necessary before the actual laying of tracks can commence.
“Preparatory works for a new tramway line will begin June 19”
The use of confidential agreements with property owners suggests the city is prioritizing the avoidance of public legal disputes to keep the project on schedule. By securing these deals before the June 19 start date, the administration minimizes the risk of injunctions that could delay the wider transit overhaul in the Saint-Roch district.
