Former Labor minister Stephen Conroy said Liberal MP Angus Taylor needs to get back to the basics of his party's policies and values.

This critique comes as the Coalition faces a significant decline in public support, suggesting a need for a fundamental shift in messaging to regain voters.

Speaking during an interview on Sky News Australia, Conroy said that Taylor is attempting to steer the political debate toward the core tenets of the Liberal Party. Conroy said that this focus is the only viable position for Taylor to take in the current political climate.

"Angus Taylor is trying to get the debate around Liberal Party policies and values," Conroy said. "That’s absolutely where he’s got to be. It’s the only place you can be."

The urgency of this shift in strategy is underscored by recent data. Conroy said a Redbridge poll indicating that the Coalition's support has dropped to 18 percent [1].

Conroy said that by returning to fundamental messaging, the Liberal Party can better define its identity against its opponents. He said that Taylor must prioritize these basics to stabilize the party's standing with the electorate.

"Angus Taylor is trying to get the debate around Liberal Party policies and values."

The tension between the Labor and Liberal parties continues to center on the Coalition's ability to define a clear, cohesive identity. A polling figure of 18 percent represents a critical low for the Coalition, suggesting that the party may be struggling to connect its current platform with the priorities of the general public.
