Overheating lithium-ion batteries caused a two-alarm fire [1] at a city-run shelter in Toronto early Wednesday morning.
The incident highlights a growing public safety crisis in Canada's largest city as the prevalence of portable electronics increases the risk of uncontrollable chemical fires.
Emergency crews responded to the call around 5:35 a.m. [2] at 2180 Islington Avenue [1]. The facility, a former hotel converted into a shelter, became the site of the blaze after batteries entered a state of thermal runaway [3]. This process occurs when a battery cell enters an uncontrollable self-heating cycle, eventually igniting surrounding materials.
Chief Jim Jessop of Toronto Fire Services said the cause of the fire during a briefing. He said the broader trend of these incidents across the city's residential and commercial sectors.
"This is the greatest evolving fire safety risk in Canada's largest city," Jessop said [4].
