U.S. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned on July 31 [1] that a powerful El Niño will intensify global heat and extreme weather events.
The warning comes as the international community faces escalating climate risks. The combination of a strengthening El Niño and long-term global warming increases the likelihood of severe heatwaves, floods, and droughts across multiple regions.
Guterres said that "El Niño is adding fuel to a planet already on fire."
According to the U.S. chief, the phenomenon is strengthening and contributing to "scorching heat domes, apocalyptic wildfires and record-hot seas," he said.
Weather data indicates that El Niño is expected to dominate the August-October 2026 season [2]. The World Meteorological Organization notes that the intensification is slated to begin in August [2].
Beyond the immediate weather threats, Guterres linked the current crisis to the continued use of carbon-intensive energy. He said that the world must halt the approval of new fossil-fuel projects to keep the 1.5 °C target within reach.
The U.S. chief said that these natural climate patterns are exacerbating existing risks, creating a more volatile environment for global populations.
