Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay distributed compassionate government job appointment orders to families of victims of the Karur stampede on Saturday.
The move highlights the ongoing political tension regarding accountability for the tragedy, as the Chief Minister used the event to criticize security failures and previous administrative lapses.
Vijay visited the Karur district collectorate to hand over appointment letters to 32 families [3]. The stampede, which occurred in 2025 [4], resulted in at least 39 deaths [1] and left over 50 people injured [1].
During the visit, Vijay said the tragedy is an "unhealed wound". He said the crowd surge was due to a lack of adequate security warnings and failures by the police and the previous administration to manage the event effectively.
This public criticism of the police and former officials has sparked a political dispute over who is responsible for the loss of life. Vijay said he questioned whether adequate security had been provided to ensure public safety during the event.
The Chief Minister's administration is using the distribution of jobs as a means of providing support to the bereaved families, while simultaneously targeting political rivals for their perceived negligence.
“The tragedy is an "unhealed wound".”
The distribution of government jobs serves as a dual-purpose political strategy for Chief Minister Vijay. By providing immediate material relief to 32 families, he reinforces his image as a compassionate leader, while his explicit blame of the police and previous administration allows him to frame the 2025 tragedy as a failure of his predecessors' governance.
