National Security Adviser Ajit Doval chaired the fifth [1] BIMSTEC National Security Chiefs' Meeting in New Delhi to strengthen regional security cooperation.

The gathering serves as a critical mechanism for seven [2] member states to synchronize defenses against shared threats. As geopolitical tensions rise, these nations seek to stabilize the region through coordinated intelligence and strategic partnerships.

The meeting focused on several key pillars of stability, including maritime security, counter-terrorism, and cybersecurity [3]. Officials also discussed the necessity of intelligence sharing and building supply-chain resilience to mitigate global uncertainties [3].

During the session, Doval emphasized the urgency of collective action. "Urgent need for us to collaborate, take decisive actions," Doval said [4]. He further noted that "global uncertainties need decisive actions" [5].

BIMSTEC includes India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Thailand [2]. The group aims to bolster regional cooperation to address security challenges that transcend national borders.

On the sidelines of the main event, Doval met with Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr. AKM Shamsul Islam, the Defence Adviser to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman [6]. The meeting took place on July 15, 2024 [6].

The discussions aimed to create a unified front against non-traditional security threats, such as cyberattacks, while maintaining traditional naval security in the Indian Ocean region.

"Urgent need for us to collaborate, take decisive actions"

The 5th BIMSTEC security meeting signals India's intent to lead a cohesive security architecture in South and Southeast Asia. By focusing on maritime and cyber resilience, these seven nations are attempting to create a buffer against external geopolitical volatility and internal instability, moving beyond diplomatic dialogue toward actionable intelligence sharing.
