A fire severely damaged a historic high-rise warehouse at the former Bata shoe factory in Zlín, Czech Republic, on Thursday [1, 2].
The incident represents a significant loss of commercial inventory and potential damage to a site of architectural and industrial importance in the center of Zlín [1, 3].
Firefighters deployed 30 units to combat the blaze [1]. Around 300 personnel were involved in the firefighting effort, which included the use of one helicopter to assist in the operation [1]. While some reports said that flames engulfed the ninth floor, other accounts indicated that part of the 10-storey building collapsed during the fire [1, 2].
The warehouse stored approximately 75,000 pairs of shoes [3]. These goods were valued at more than CZK 150 million [3], while other estimates place the value of the destroyed goods at about US$7 million [4].
The cause of the fire has not been disclosed in available reports [1, 2]. Emergency crews worked to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading further into the historic district.
“Around 300 personnel were involved in the firefighting effort”
The destruction of a large volume of inventory at a site as historically significant as the Bata factory highlights the vulnerability of industrial heritage buildings to modern fire risks. The disparity in reported monetary losses between local and international sources suggests a significant impact on both local currency assets and global insurance valuations.
