South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster appointed Darline Graham Nordone to fill the U.S. Senate seat vacated by her brother, the late Senator Lindsey Graham.
The appointment ensures the seat remains filled for the remainder of the term following the death of Senator Graham over the weekend. This move maintains the state's representation in Washington and follows a public recommendation from President Donald Trump.
Governor McMaster announced the appointment on Monday, July 13 [1], during a news conference held in Columbia, South Carolina. The appointment was required by state law to address the vacancy created by the senator's death.
President Donald Trump expressed his support for the choice prior to the announcement. "I have recommended to Governor Henry McMaster that he choose Lindsey’s sister to finish the term," Trump said.
Nordone spoke about the personal nature of the appointment during a CNN interview. "Lindsey has always been there for me, and now I will be there for him," Nordone said.
In a separate statement, Nordone addressed her grief regarding the loss of her brother. "To Lindsey, I miss you more than I can even put into words," Nordone said.
The appointment allows Nordone to serve the remaining duration of her brother's term. The selection process was expedited to ensure the state did not lose its voting power in the Senate during this transition period.
“"Lindsey has always been there for me, and now I will be there for him."”
The appointment of Darline Graham Nordone preserves the political continuity of the seat and reflects the influence of President Trump on the selection process. By appointing a family member of the late senator, the governor avoids a potentially contentious political battle over the vacancy while honoring the legacy of the former senator.
