Italian mountaineer Leonardo Avezzano reached the summit of Mount Everest carrying a kite featuring handwritten hopes and dreams from children in Gaza [1, 2].

The ascent serves as a global call for attention toward the humanitarian toll the war has taken on the youngest victims in Gaza. By bringing these messages to the highest point on Earth, the expedition seeks to amplify the voices of children who are currently displaced or affected by conflict [2, 3].

Avezzano worked with expedition leader Mostafa Salameh, a Palestinian-Jordanian climber, to organize the effort [1, 2]. While some reports differed on the final ascent, video evidence indicates Avezzano carried the kite to the peak while Salameh, who led the expedition, was unable to summit [1, 6].

The kite was constructed from a Palestinian flag and served as a canvas for the children's messages [2, 3]. Avezzano said, "The first thing that I had in mind to do was to raise the flag, raise the kite and basically dedicate this effort that we did for the children of Gaza" [1].

Beyond raising awareness, the mission is tied to a significant financial goal. The expedition aims to raise $10 million [5] for relief efforts to assist those impacted by the war [3, 4].

Salameh said the mission was designed to bridge the gap between the isolation of the conflict zone and the global community. He said, "It's about awareness on what these children are going through and at the same time to raise money" [4].

Salameh also linked the climb to his own personal aspirations for the region. He said, "My dream, like the dreams of these children, is to see Palestine ..." [5].

"The first thing that I had in mind to do was to raise the flag, raise the kite and basically dedicate this effort that we did for the children of Gaza."

This expedition utilizes the global prestige and visibility of a Mount Everest summit to pivot a sporting achievement into a humanitarian campaign. By centering the narrative on the dreams of children, the organizers aim to humanize the statistics of the Gaza war and leverage the physical height of the summit to create a symbolic 'megaphone' for a marginalized population.
