French street artist JR has opened a large-scale art installation covering the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris [1].

The project, titled “Caverne” or “Pont Neuf Cavern,” transforms the city's oldest bridge into a cavern-like optical illusion. By wrapping the structure, the installation continues a tradition of public art that challenges the perception of urban architecture and invites pedestrians to experience the city from a new perspective.

The installation opened on Monday, June 3, 2024 [1]. The start of the project was delayed due to weather conditions [1]. The artwork is designed as a direct tribute to the famous “Pont Neuf Wrapped” installation created by artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude [1], reports said.

JR is known for his immersive street art and large-scale photography. With this project, he utilizes the physical form of the bridge to create a visual experience that mimics a natural cave. The installation allows the public to walk through the structure and observe the surrounding city through a distorted, artistic lens.

The exhibit is scheduled to remain open to the public until June 28, 2024 [2].

The project, titled “Caverne” or “Pont Neuf Cavern,” transforms the city's oldest bridge into a cavern-like optical illusion.

This installation bridges the gap between contemporary street art and the legacy of environmental art. By referencing Christo and Jeanne-Claude, JR acknowledges the influence of large-scale wrapping projects on modern public installations while using optical illusions to redefine the relationship between the viewer and one of Paris's most historic landmarks.
