Rahul Gandhi, a Congress MP and opposition leader in the Lok Sabha, criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the cancellation of UGC-NET exams.
The incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding the integrity of India's national testing systems and the administrative oversight of the agencies managing them.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) ordered the cancellation and retaking of exams for three subjects [1] after the discovery of faulty question papers. The affected subjects include English, Commerce, and Sociology [2].
Gandhi targeted both the Prime Minister and the NTA, suggesting that the systemic failures within the testing agency required more than a single personnel change. He specifically referenced the departure of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan as an insufficient remedy for the broader issues facing the agency.
"Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation was the first step, not the last, in fixing the system," Gandhi said.
The opposition leader argued that the responsibility for the errors extends beyond the ministry to the operational leadership of the testing body itself. He suggested that the current state of the NTA reflects a failure of governance under the current administration.
"The NTA's leadership must be held accountable too," Gandhi said.
The UGC-NET examinations are critical for determining eligibility for university lectureship and research fellowships in India. The decision to force students to retake these exams has sparked significant debate over the reliability of the NTA's quality control processes [2].
“"Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation was the first step, not the last, in fixing the system."”
The cancellation of the UGC-NET exams for English, Commerce, and Sociology underscores a period of volatility for the National Testing Agency. By linking the technical failure of the exams to the resignation of the Education Minister, the opposition is attempting to frame administrative errors as a broader failure of the central government's competence in managing public infrastructure and education.
