President Donald Trump took his first presidential flight on a Qatar-gifted Boeing 747-8 retrofitted as Air Force One on July 1, 2024 [1].
The use of the aircraft marks a significant shift in the U.S. presidential fleet, utilizing a foreign gift to modernize executive transport. This move has drawn attention to the diplomatic and financial ties between the U.S. and the Qatari government.
Trump flew to North Dakota for an Independence Day event at Mount Rushmore [2]. The aircraft, a Boeing 747-8 [3], was gifted by the Qatari government in 2023 [4] to help modernize the fleet of planes used by the U.S. president.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth confirmed the acquisition of the aircraft. "We have accepted the gifted Boeing 747 from Qatar for President Trump to use as Air Force One," Hegseth said [5].
The decision to accept the aircraft was defended by the president himself. "Only a ‘stupid person’ would refuse Qatar’s gift of a new Air Force One jet," Trump said [6].
The aircraft underwent retrofitting to meet the security and communication standards required for the U.S. president. While some reports initially suggested the president was only considering the flight, subsequent reports confirmed the journey took place on July 1 [1, 7].
“"Only a ‘stupid person’ would refuse Qatar’s gift of a new Air Force One jet."”
The acceptance and deployment of a foreign-gifted aircraft as the primary U.S. presidential transport is an unconventional move. Typically, Air Force One aircraft are commissioned and built domestically to ensure absolute control over security specifications and supply chains. This reliance on a gift from Qatar may signal a pivot in how the administration handles diplomatic gifts and the modernization of military-grade executive transport.
