Ecatepec officials inaugurated a new "Sendero Seguro" pedestrian corridor featuring lighting, paving, and sculptures inspired by the 2026 World Cup.
The project aims to improve urban security and infrastructure in a region facing significant safety challenges. By combining functional upgrades with cultural monuments, the municipal government seeks to revitalize public spaces ahead of the international football tournament.
Mayor Azucena Cisneros Coss led the opening of the path in the Santa Clara Coatitla neighborhood. The project is located on the Mexico-Pachuca highway, specifically along the Prolongación Sección 5 [2]. The corridor extends nearly two kilometers [1] and includes new sidewalks, urban cleaning, and monumental sculptures designed to celebrate the state's preparation for the tournament.
Reports on the exact timing of the opening vary among sources. Some records indicate the path was enabled on Feb. 26, 2024 [2], while other reports state the official inauguration occurred on May 23, 2024 [3].
The initiative is part of a broader effort to reinforce security through environmental design. The government said the combination of lighting and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure would reduce crime and improve mobility for residents in the Estado de México.
The sculptures serve as a visual tie to the World Cup 2026, aligning the municipal works with the larger regional goal of preparing infrastructure for the global event. This approach integrates urban maintenance with the promotional atmosphere of the upcoming games.
“The corridor extends nearly two kilometers”
The installation of the Sendero Seguro reflects a strategy of 'crime prevention through environmental design' (CPTED). By improving lighting and visibility in high-traffic areas like the Mexico-Pachuca highway, officials are attempting to reduce opportunistic crime. Furthermore, linking these civic improvements to the 2026 World Cup allows the local government to leverage international attention to justify and accelerate urban renewal projects.
