François Bayrou, president of the MoDem party, announced he will not stand as a candidate in the 2027 French presidential election.
Bayrou is a veteran political figure whose decision removes a potential centrist contender from the race. His withdrawal signals a shift in focus toward economic advocacy rather than executive power as the country prepares for its next leadership transition.
Speaking during an interview on France Inter in Paris, Bayrou said he wants to preserve his freedom of tone and maintain a clear message regarding France's debt and economic challenges. He expressed a desire to avoid being associated with what he described as a frivolous party, referring to it as “Tout Pour Ma Gueule” (All For Myself).
“If I were a candidate, the French would think that I too am a member of the ‘TPMG’ party, the ‘All For Myself’!” Bayrou said.
Bayrou has been absent from public debate for nine months [1] since leaving Matignon. He said that he does not want to tarnish the importance of his message on French debt by making a declaration of candidacy.
This announcement comes ahead of the release of his book, "Alerte sur la France qui vient," which is scheduled for publication on June 18, 2026 [1].
“I am renouncing the 2027 presidential election to preserve my freedom of tone and alert on the economic stakes that are crucial for France,” Bayrou said.
By stepping aside, Bayrou intends to act as an external observer and critic of the nation's fiscal trajectory. He believes that remaining outside the official candidate pool allows him to address the economic crisis without the constraints of a political campaign.
““If I were a candidate, the French would think that I too am a member of the ‘TPMG’ party, the ‘All For Myself’!””
Bayrou's decision to forgo the 2027 election suggests a strategic pivot from political leadership to intellectual influence. By positioning himself as a fiscal alarmist rather than a candidate, he seeks to avoid the personal scrutiny and compromise of a campaign, instead leveraging his book and public appearances to shape the national conversation on debt.
