A mega-meeting of the INDIA opposition alliance in New Delhi revealed deep internal divisions as regional partners publicly criticized the Congress party.
These frictions threaten the stability of the coalition's effort to present a united front against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The discord centers on leadership disputes and accusations of betrayal following recent political shifts in southern India.
Representatives from 23 parties participated in the gathering [1]. While the meeting was intended to project strength, it instead exposed dissent from key allies including the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).
The tension stems from the collapse of the long-time alliance between Congress and the DMK in Tamil Nadu. This split occurred after Congress provided support to a government led by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a move DMK leaders said was a betrayal.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted these cracks in the opposition's facade. He said the Congress has become "power-hungry" and is back-stabbing its long-time ally DMK.
Key figures such as Rahul Gandhi of the Congress, M.K. Stalin of the DMK, and Mamata Banerjee of the TMC were present at the May 2024 summit. Despite the public friction, some allies have indicated they want the Congress party to remain strong at the center to effectively challenge the BJP.
The struggle for dominance within the bloc continues as regional parties balance their need for a national partner with their own local political interests.
“The Congress has become "power-hungry" and is back-stabbing its long-time ally DMK.”
The public discord within the INDIA bloc suggests that ideological alignment against the BJP may not be enough to overcome regional power struggles. The conflict in Tamil Nadu serves as a catalyst, revealing that regional parties view the Congress party's ambition for national leadership as a potential threat to their own local autonomy and stability.
