India and Nepal launched a cross-border UPI linkage on June 6, 2026, following a diplomatic meeting in New Delhi [1].
This agreement marks a significant shift in digital financial cooperation between the two neighbors. By integrating their payment systems, the nations aim to streamline trade and travel, while reducing reliance on traditional banking intermediaries.
External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar met with Nepal's Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal to discuss a broad range of cooperative efforts [1]. The discussions focused on energy, connectivity, and digital infrastructure. Both ministers said there is a need to accelerate joint projects to achieve the full potential of their bilateral relationship [2, 3].
As part of the post-2015 earthquake reconstruction programme, India handed over 72 health facilities to Nepal [2]. This initiative aims to restore essential medical services in regions still recovering from the disaster. The handover of these facilities is part of a larger commitment to support Nepal's public health infrastructure.
Cultural preservation also featured prominently in the talks. India handed over 12 cultural heritage projects under the same reconstruction programme [2]. These projects focus on restoring sites of historical and spiritual significance to both nations.
Beyond infrastructure and health, the two leaders discussed connectivity and energy cooperation [2]. These sectors are viewed as critical pillars for economic growth in the region. The launch of the UPI link is expected to complement these physical infrastructure improvements by providing a modern digital layer for economic exchange [1, 2].
“India and Nepal launched a cross-border UPI linkage on June 6, 2026”
The integration of UPI systems and the completion of reconstruction projects signal a strategic effort by India to deepen its footprint in Nepal's digital and physical infrastructure. By linking financial systems and restoring health and cultural sites, India is strengthening its 'neighborhood first' policy, aiming for greater economic interdependence to stabilize regional ties.
