India and Norway elevated their bilateral relationship to a Green Strategic Partnership during a meeting in Oslo on Monday [1].
This upgrade signals a shift toward deep integration in sustainability and advanced technology, aligning India's economic priorities with Norwegian expertise in clean energy. The move aims to secure critical mineral supply chains and bolster defense cooperation between the two nations [2].
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre announced the partnership to focus on sustainability, clean energy, critical minerals, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, space, and defence [3]. The agreement seeks to provide Norwegian companies with expanded access to the Indian market while supporting India's transition to a greener economy [4].
"We are delighted to elevate our ties to a Green Strategic Partnership," Modi said [5].
Støre said the collaboration would expand beyond traditional trade. "This partnership will open new avenues for cooperation in critical minerals and clean energy," Støre said [6].
Economic ties between the two countries have shown steady activity, with bilateral trade standing at approximately $2.73 billion in 2024 [7]. The new framework is intended to accelerate this growth by targeting high-tech sectors. Modi said the partnership extends to security and innovation, a critical component for India's diversifying strategic interests.
"Norwegian companies will receive full support from India in sectors such as artificial intelligence, cyber technology, space, and defence," Modi said [8].
The announcement took place during a business summit where Modi promoted the Invest India initiative to encourage Nordic investment [9]. The partnership emphasizes a mutual commitment to climate goals and the development of sustainable infrastructure.
“"We are delighted to elevate our ties to a Green Strategic Partnership,"”
The elevation to a Green Strategic Partnership reflects India's broader strategy to reduce dependence on single-source suppliers for critical minerals and green technology. By partnering with Norway, a leader in maritime and energy sectors, India gains a strategic gateway to Nordic innovation and sustainable investment, while Norway secures a firmer foothold in one of the world's fastest-growing major economies.
