Pope Leo XIV met with about 500,000 [1] young people during an evening prayer vigil at Madrid's Plaza de Lima on Saturday.
The gathering marks the start of a six-day apostolic visit to Spain. The event serves as a strategic effort to encourage young Catholics and promote unity in a climate of social division.
The atmosphere in the plaza resembled a rock concert, with crowds greeting the pontiff with chants of "This is the youth of the pope!" The vigil included chants and prayers as part of the first day of the official visit.
During his address to the crowd, the pope emphasized the importance of personal character and empathy. "Be human as Christ is," Leo XIV said.
He also addressed the current social and political climate, urging the youth to look past divisive rhetoric. "We must set aside polarising narratives," the pope said.
The scale of the event was significant, with an estimated 500,000 [2] attendees filling the plaza. Other reports described the turnout as hundreds of thousands of young people, though the primary estimates remain consistent at the half-million mark.
The visit aims to reconnect the papacy with the Spanish youth and strengthen the church's influence in the region through direct engagement and public prayer.
“"Be human as Christ is,"”
This visit represents a concerted effort by the Vatican to maintain relevance among Gen Z and Millennial populations in Europe. By focusing on humanism and the rejection of polarization, Pope Leo XIV is positioning the church as a stabilizing force against the increasing political fragmentation seen across the European Union.
