Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has called on Chief Minister Hemant Soren to meet with students protesting for education reforms in Jharkhand.
The standoff highlights growing tensions between the state government and youth activists over alleged oppressive policies and the cost of education. While Gandhi has offered public support, his absence from the protest site in Ranchi has drawn criticism from the demonstrators.
Students associated with the JSSC and JPSC have been on a hunger strike for 24 days [1]. The protesters allege a government crackdown and have warned of a possible escalation on Aug. 20, 2026 [3]. The students seek immediate dialogue and systemic reforms to the education system.
Gandhi wrote a letter to Soren urging the chief minister to engage with the youth, stating that "youth are India's future" [2]. He also addressed the reported use of force against the students. "I condemn the use of force against Jharkhand students and call for immediate dialogue," Gandhi said [3].
Despite these statements, Gandhi has not visited Ranchi. He was instead scheduled to address a "Chhatron Ki Goonj" rally in Pune [1]. This decision has led to frustration among the hunger strikers, who have questioned the sincerity of his support.
Some student protesters said that if Gandhi is unhappy with the lathi charge on students, he should visit the protest site and withdraw support from the government [1].
The protesters continue to demand an audience with Soren to discuss their grievances regarding education costs, and administrative policies. The state government has not yet announced a date for a formal meeting with the hunger strikers.
“"Youth are India's future"”
This situation creates a political dilemma for the Jharkhand government, as it faces pressure from both its own youth constituency and a senior leader within its supporting coalition. The demand for Rahul Gandhi to withdraw support from the government suggests that the students view the Congress party's leverage as a primary tool for forcing the state administration to negotiate.
