Six rebel members of parliament from the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT) faction of Shiv Sena have accepted the leadership of Eknath Shinde.
This shift signals a significant fragmentation of the UBT faction, potentially altering the balance of power within the Maharashtra state government and the Lok Sabha. The move complicates the legal and political standing of the party's original leadership.
The six MPs [1] submitted a formal letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. In the correspondence, the lawmakers requested recognition as a separate parliamentary group, formally distancing themselves from the UBT wing. This action follows a period of internal friction within the party structure.
In response to the deepening split, the Maharashtra government has granted the rebel lawmakers Y+ security cover. Officials said the security measures were implemented to ensure the safety of the MPs as tensions rise between the competing factions of the Shiv Sena.
The transition occurs as both sides of the split continue to contest the legitimacy of their respective claims to the party name and symbol. By aligning with Shinde, these six lawmakers [1] have effectively shifted their allegiance to the rival camp, further weakening the UBT faction's numerical strength in the lower house of parliament.
“Six rebel MPs from the UBT faction have accepted the leadership of Eknath Shinde.”
The alignment of these six MPs with Eknath Shinde reduces the legislative leverage of the UBT faction. By seeking separate recognition through the Lok Sabha Speaker, the rebels are attempting to formalize a legal break that could influence future party symbol disputes and government stability in Maharashtra.
