Speculation of an alliance between the AIADMK and DMK intensified after Governor Rajendra Arlekar interviewed Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) chief Vijay.
The move comes as political parties struggle to form a government in Tamil Nadu following the April 2026 Assembly elections. Because no single party secured an outright majority, the state remains in a deadlock while leaders explore coalition options to reach the required threshold in the 233-seat Assembly [3].
The meeting between the Governor and Vijay took place on a Wednesday at Lok Bhavan in Chennai. This interaction has fueled reports that traditional rivals, the AIADMK and DMK, may consider a pact to prevent a TVK-led administration.
Discrepancies exist regarding the exact strength of Vijay's party. One report states TVK won 108 seats [1], while another indicates the party's effective strength was 107 seats [2]. Either figure leaves the party short of a majority in the 233-member house [3].
Positions within the DMK appear divided or evolving. Some sources said the DMK has asked the AIADMK to leave the BJP, stating it cannot tie up with a communal party [1]. However, other reports suggest DMK chief Stalin expressed support for a TVK-led government, saying, "Let Vijay form the government" [2].
The political landscape remains fluid as the Governor evaluates the claims of various parties. The possibility of an AIADMK-DMK tie-up would represent a significant shift in the state's political alignment, one driven by the need to stabilize the government in the face of a strong third-party showing.
“No single party secured an outright majority, the state remains in a deadlock.”
The current instability in Tamil Nadu reflects the disruptive impact of the TVK under Vijay, who managed to capture a significant portion of the Assembly. A potential alliance between the DMK and AIADMK—historically fierce rivals—would suggest that the established political order is willing to prioritize power-sharing over ideological differences to block a newcomer from taking the chief minister's office.
