Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay announced a new scheme providing government cars and monthly allowances to all 234 state MLAs [1].
The move aims to improve the efficiency of lawmakers as they travel to their constituencies to address public grievances. By providing standardized logistics, the administration seeks to reduce corruption and increase transparency in how representatives manage their official duties.
Under the new program, each MLA will receive a government car [3]. This is accompanied by a combined monthly allowance of Rs 1 lakh [2]. The total is split into two specific categories: Rs 75,000 for vehicle expenses, and Rs 25,000 for the employment of an assistant [1].
Chief Minister Joseph Vijay said that MLAs need to travel to their constituencies frequently to address people's problems. He said that a government vehicle will ensure transparent and corruption free governance.
Some lawmakers have welcomed the decision as a necessary step for effective governance. VCK MLA Jothimani said that MLAs cannot work effectively without the required logistics support and requested cars for them.
The distribution of these resources is intended to remove the personal financial burden of travel from the representatives. The administration believes that providing these tools will allow lawmakers to spend more time in the field rather than managing logistics.
“Government vehicle will ensure transparent and corruption free governance.”
This policy represents a significant increase in state expenditure on legislative perks. By institutionalizing travel and staffing costs, the Vijay administration is attempting to standardize the operational capacity of all 234 MLAs regardless of their personal wealth. However, the move may face scrutiny regarding the use of public funds for lawmaker luxuries during periods of fiscal constraint.
