Vijay Thalapathy, leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), ruled out offering cabinet posts to rebel AIADMK MLAs supporting his government.
This decision creates a significant hurdle for the administration as it seeks to stabilize its coalition and manage internal political pressures. By denying ministerial roles to these legislators, Vijay is navigating a delicate balance between maintaining government support and satisfying the demands of his ideological partners.
The cabinet expansion is scheduled for May 21, 2024 [1]. The move to exclude AIADMK rebels comes as a direct response to objections raised by coalition partners, including the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchasi (VCK), and various Left parties.
These partners have expressed opposition to rewarding legislators who defected from the AIADMK. The TVK leader said that the administration would not provide these positions to the rebels to avoid rewarding such political shifts.
While the expansion is expected to proceed on May 21, 2024 [1], other potential partners such as the VCK and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) have yet to decide on joining the government. The exclusion of the rebels remains a primary stumbling block in the finalization of the cabinet structure.
The TVK government continues to negotiate with these parties to ensure a broad base of support. However, the refusal to grant portfolios to the AIADMK dissidents signals a preference for coalition cohesion over the immediate convenience of absorbing opposition defectors.
“Vijay ruled out offering cabinet posts to rebel AIADMK MLAs supporting his government”
This decision reflects a strategic priority for the TVK to maintain the trust of its coalition partners, particularly the VCK and Left parties, who view the appointment of defectors as politically opportunistic. By prioritizing ideological consistency over the inclusion of AIADMK rebels, Vijay is attempting to build a government based on coalition loyalty rather than a patchwork of opportunistic alliances, though this may risk the long-term loyalty of the rebels who provided the government's initial support.
