World Health Organization Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus called for a temporary ceasefire in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to contain an Ebola outbreak.
The request highlights the critical intersection of armed conflict and public health, as violence prevents medical teams from reaching vulnerable populations in the Ituri region. Without a truce, the WHO warns that the disease will continue to spread through displaced communities.
Dr. Tedros made the plea on May 27, 2024, and said that warring parties must allow health workers through to save lives. He said, "Please, declare a ceasefire. Even briefly. Even just enough to let health workers through. People are dying from Ebola who do not have to die."
The outbreak was officially declared on May 15, 2024 [3]. Since that declaration, there have been 10 confirmed deaths [1] and 223 suspected deaths [2] in the DRC. The surge in cases is being fueled by instability in the east, where fighting has forced thousands of people into overcrowded camps.
Dr. Tedros said that ongoing fighting was driving mass displacement and spreading the disease in overcrowded camps. He said the situation was urgent as he traveled to the region, telling those affected, "You are not alone in Ebola fight."
The WHO is seeking a window of stability to implement vaccination and treatment protocols. The organization said that the combination of displacement and lack of medical access creates an environment where the virus can proliferate rapidly, making a humanitarian corridor essential for containment.
“"People are dying from Ebola who do not have to die."”
The call for a ceasefire underscores how geopolitical instability directly undermines global health security. When armed conflict disrupts the 'last mile' of healthcare delivery, preventable outbreaks can evolve into regional crises. This situation demonstrates that medical interventions for Ebola are ineffective if the security environment prevents the delivery of vaccines and the establishment of treatment centers.
