President Xi Jinping led a ceremony Monday at the Great Hall of the People to mark the 100th birth anniversary [1] of former leader Jiang Zemin.
The event serves as a strategic signal of China's direction as the nation navigates current economic and geopolitical challenges by anchoring future goals in past reforms.
During the commemoration, Xi reflected on the contributions of Jiang Zemin to the stability and modernization of the state. He noted that Jiang Zemin ensured the Party’s survival from ‘political storms’ and reformed it to inject new vitality, Xi said [2].
The ceremony took place on Aug. 17, 2024 [3] in Beijing, where the current leadership gathered to evaluate the trajectory of the country. Xi used the occasion to link the historical successes of the previous administration to the current requirements of the Chinese state.
Xi emphasized that the spirit of the previous era remains relevant to the present. Drawing on Jiang’s legacy of reform, opening up, and innovation, we must forge ahead with confidence, Xi said [1].
The event highlighted the importance of continuity within the Communist Party. By praising Jiang's role in opening China to the world, Xi positioned his own priorities as an evolution of those earlier policies—rather than a departure from them.
Officials at the ceremony discussed the necessity of innovation to maintain growth. The gathering focused on how the principles of reform established decades ago provide the foundation for the strategic priorities Xi has outlined for the coming years.
“Jiang Zemin ensured the Party’s survival from ‘political storms’ and reformed it to inject new vitality.”
By publicly honoring Jiang Zemin on his centenary, Xi Jinping is reinforcing the legitimacy of the Communist Party's historical trajectory. This alignment allows the current administration to claim the successes of the 'opening up' era while framing current strategic shifts as a necessary continuation of that same reformist spirit.
