Researchers at the University of Hong Kong have developed a blood test that predicts heart disease risk years before clinical symptoms appear.
This development allows doctors to identify high-risk individuals much earlier than current diagnostic methods permit. Early detection enables medical professionals to implement prevention and treatment strategies long before a patient experiences a cardiac event.
According to research reported in July [1], the test can predict the onset of heart disease up to 15 years [1] before clinical symptoms manifest. The technology functions by estimating the biological age of the body rather than relying solely on chronological age.
There are varying reports on the specific scope of the test's measurements. Some data indicates the test estimates the biological ages of 11 separate organ systems [2], while other reports state it can estimate the biological age of more than 40 cell types [3].
Dr. Tara Narula of ABC News said the research is a tool for identifying individuals at high risk for heart disease [4]. By pinpointing these risks early, the medical community aims to reduce the incidence of late-stage heart failure and sudden cardiac arrest.
The University of Hong Kong team designed the test to bridge the gap between general aging and specific organ decline. This approach provides a more granular view of how different parts of the body are aging relative to one another, a key factor in predicting systemic failure.
