Authorities and store staff recovered a Malayan blood python on Tuesday after it escaped its enclosure at a home center in Joetsu, Niigata Prefecture.

The reptile was located shortly before 11 a.m. [4] on May 26, 2026. Store employees and police officers conducted a search of the premises after the snake escaped from its glass case. The animal was eventually found hiding in a gap between cardboard boxes, approximately seven meters [3] away from its original enclosure.
