The São Paulo state government is opening an emergency shelter at the Pedro II Metro Station to protect homeless residents from a cold wave.
The initiative is a critical response to a sharp drop in temperatures that threatens vulnerable populations in the city center. Without emergency intervention, the extreme cold poses significant health risks to those living on the streets.
The Abrigo Solidário will operate at the Pedro II Station on Line 3-Red starting at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 13 [3]. The facility will remain open until 8 a.m. on Thursday, July 16 [4].
According to the state's Civil Defense, the shelter aims to provide immediate refuge during the most intense period of the cold front. "The action will be maintained until 8 a.m. on Thursday (16), with the objective of offer emergency shelter to the population in a street situation during the period of most intense cold," the Government of the State of São Paulo said [1].
The weather alert comes as the region expects a significant temperature decline. The Civil Defense of the State of São Paulo said the new cold front should bring a drop of up to three degrees Celsius [1], with minimum temperatures expected to reach seven degrees Celsius in the Greater São Paulo area [2].
Local authorities are coordinating the logistics at the metro station to ensure that the homeless population has access to warmth and safety. The Civil Defense of São Paulo said it would activate the shelter starting Monday night to mitigate the impact of the freezing weather [2].
“The Abrigo Solidário will operate at the Pedro II Station on Line 3-Red starting at 7 p.m. on Monday.”
The activation of the Abrigo Solidário highlights the recurring challenge São Paulo faces in managing urban poverty during seasonal weather extremes. By utilizing public infrastructure like the metro system for emergency housing, the city attempts to prevent cold-related deaths, though the short-term nature of the shelter underscores a lack of permanent, year-round housing solutions for the city's homeless population.
