A cleric in Uttar Pradesh issued a fatwa declaring Bollywood actor Aamir Khan's third marriage to Gauri Spratt illegal and against Sharia law.
The decree highlights the tension between traditional religious interpretations and the personal lives of high-profile public figures in India. Because the marriage involves a non-Muslim partner, it has sparked a debate over the application of Islamic law in modern society.
Maulana Ibrahim Hussain said the union violates religious mandates. "Marrying a non-Muslim is against Sharia," Hussain said.
The fatwa arrived 10 days [1] after the public announcement of the marriage. This union marks the third marriage [2] for the actor, according to reports. The cleric's ruling focuses specifically on the religious status of the spouse to justify the illegality of the bond.
However, the religious community is not in agreement regarding the legality of the union. While Hussain maintains the marriage is prohibited, another Islamic scholar, Qari Ishaq Gora, said there is no problem with the marriage. This contradiction suggests a lack of consensus among scholars regarding the specific circumstances of the union.
The actor has not yet issued a formal response to the fatwa. The situation remains centered in Uttar Pradesh, where the cleric's declaration was first publicized.
“"Marrying a non-Muslim is against Sharia."”
The conflicting views between Maulana Ibrahim Hussain and Qari Ishaq Gora illustrate the internal diversity of legal interpretation within Islamic scholarship in India. While fatwas are influential in specific community circles, they do not hold legal weight in the Indian judicial system, which governs marriage and civil rights through national law.
