Trinamool Congress national general secretary and Member of Parliament Abhishek Banerjee was attacked by locals during a visit to Sonarpur on Saturday [1, 2].
The incident highlights the volatile political climate in West Bengal, where tensions between the ruling TMC and opposition supporters frequently escalate into physical confrontations.
Banerjee visited the South 24 Parganas district to meet with the families of victims of post-poll violence [1, 3]. During the visit, local protesters targeted his convoy by throwing stones and eggs [2, 3]. Some protesters also raised slogans of "chor chor," which translates to "thief thief" [4].
Banerjee said the attack was coordinated by political opponents. "It's all BJP-sponsored. Look what they have done. This is their example of democracy," he said [1].
The TMC leader also criticized the local security response during the incident. He said that the police were nowhere to be seen and questioned the state of democracy in the region [1, 2].
Local residents engaged in the protest, while Banerjee said the aggression was an organized effort by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to disrupt his meeting with affected families [1, 3].
“"This is their example of democracy."”
The attack on a high-ranking TMC official underscores the persistent instability in West Bengal's post-election landscape. The clash between a senior leader's attempt to engage with violence victims and the aggressive response of locals suggests a deep societal divide and a failure of local law enforcement to maintain order during political outreach.
