Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa announced he will not play in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) and will instead compete in the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
The decision highlights a growing tension between elite players and the financial structures of the world's most popular T20 league. As players seek maximum value for their availability, Zampa's public rejection of the IPL based on salary suggests a shift in how top-tier talent views the league's market value.
Zampa said the IPL does not attract the kind of money he expects [1]. He said he was not satisfied with the contract terms and therefore chose the PSL [2]. This financial disagreement follows a period where Sunrisers Hyderabad had offered Zampa INR 2.60 crore before releasing him [3].
Currently, Zampa is playing for the Karachi Kings in the PSL. He has already demonstrated his form on the field, recording bowling figures of two wickets for 11 runs in four overs during a match against the Lahore Qalandars at Gaddafi Stadium [4].
"I'm not playing IPL 2026 because I..." Zampa said in a recent interview [5]. He said the financial incentives provided by the Indian league were not competitive enough to warrant his participation this year [1].
While some observers described the reasoning for skipping the league as unusual, Zampa said the move was a direct result of the financial terms offered to him [6]. By prioritizing the PSL, the spinner has aligned himself with a league that provided the specific terms he required for the 2026 season [2].
“"It doesn't attract the kind of money that..."”
Zampa's decision reflects a broader trend of 'league hopping' where elite cricketers prioritize financial flexibility and specific contract valuations over the prestige of a single tournament. By publicly citing insufficient pay as the reason for skipping the IPL, Zampa may be signaling to other franchises that top-tier specialists are no longer willing to accept standardized valuations, potentially forcing leagues to restructure how they attract international stars.
