Agnikul Cosmos is preparing Mission-02 to test rocket booster recovery and orbital reuse following the appointment of former ISRO chairman Dr S Somanath [2, 3].
This move signals a critical shift for India's private space sector as it attempts to lower launch costs through reusability. By integrating leadership from the national space agency, the startup aims to accelerate the transition from experimental hardware to operational orbital recovery.
Dr S Somanath joined the Agnikul board as an observer in July [2, 5]. The appointment comes as the company focuses on the technical hurdles of returning hardware from space. "I am excited to contribute to Agnikul’s ambitious reusable launch program," Somanath said [6].
The company has already conducted between 70 and 80 tests on its reusable-rocket hardware [1]. These tests serve as the foundation for Mission-02, which will specifically evaluate the ability to recover boosters, and reuse them for subsequent orbital flights [3].
Srinath Ravichandran, co-founder and CEO of Agnikul Cosmos, said that the engineering requirements for recovery differ fundamentally from standard launch vehicles. "Bringing a rocket back isn’t an add-on, it’s a ground-up new work," Ravichandran said [1].
Based in Chennai, Agnikul Cosmos is positioning itself as a key player in the global effort to make space access more sustainable [2, 5]. The company's strategy relies on the successful execution of Mission-02 to prove that private Indian firms can master the complex physics of booster landing—a feat previously dominated by a few global entities.
Success in these tests would allow the company to significantly reduce the cost per kilogram of payload delivered to orbit. This reduction is essential for increasing the frequency of satellite deployments, and expanding the commercial viability of small-satellite launches.
