Security executives and business leaders are debating the necessity of human oversight as artificial intelligence is integrated into industrial and retail operations.
This shift matters because the rapid deployment of agentic AI threatens to displace traditional work roles while introducing risks related to algorithmic bias and operational errors.
At the RSAC 2026 conference in San Francisco, which took place June 12-14 [1], chief information security officers from firms including Google Cloud and Vodafone discussed the tension between speed and safety. Some experts argued that AI can operate faster without human intervention, while others maintained that a "human-in-the-loop" is required to manage risk.
“We need a human-in-the-loop to validate AI decisions, otherwise we risk amplifying bias and errors,” a Google Cloud CISO said [2].
The transition extends beyond cybersecurity into the global supply chain and manufacturing. John Markus Lervik, founder of Cognite, and other technology providers are focusing on turning operational data into measurable results to combat slowing productivity and rising energy demands. This evolution is impacting workers in factories, power plants, and retail stores globally.
Financial investments are driving this transformation. Generative AI spending was projected to reach $644 billion in 2026 [3]. This capital is reshaping consumer packaged goods operations and retail strategies, where companies are using agentic AI to boost customer sales.
However, the scale of the rollout is creating a critical skills gap. A ZDNet analyst said that AI agent deployments will grow 327% [4] over a two-year period. Because of this trajectory, the analyst said companies must start reskilling their workforce now to keep pace with the technology.
Retailers and supply-chain managers are now tasked with reinventing their business models. The goal is to balance the efficiency of AI agents with the ethical and technical validation provided by human staff, a balance that remains a point of contention among industry leaders.

The transition to agentic AI represents a move from AI as a tool to AI as an autonomous operator. While the projected 327% growth in deployments suggests an aggressive push for efficiency, the debate at RSAC 2026 highlights a growing corporate anxiety regarding the loss of human oversight. For the global workforce, this means a shift in value from technical execution to a supervisory role centered on validation and ethics.
