This shift represents a fundamental change in the labor market as automation replaces cognitive tasks that were previously considered secure. As white-collar roles vanish, workers are pivoting toward physical trades that AI cannot replicate, leading to higher wages for skilled laborers.

The impact is evident in the tech sector. More than 200 tech companies worldwide fired 113,600 people in the first half of 2026 [1]. This follows a trend from the previous year, where 122,600 people were fired across the same sector in 2025 [1].

In the U.S., some workers have found significant financial gains by abandoning corporate roles for trade work. One former accountant who became a plumber reported a three-fold increase in income [1].
