Senior AIADMK leader C. V. Shanmugam has leveled serious allegations against party General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, sparking an internal revolt in Tamil Nadu.
The dispute threatens the stability of the AIADMK as a significant portion of its legislative wing distances itself from the current leadership. This friction follows a series of electoral setbacks and concerns regarding law-and-order conditions within the state.
The rebellion gained momentum in mid-April 2026, with reports emerging on April 17 and 18 of that month. Shanmugam has sought legal recognition for his faction, while Palaniswami has fought back against the charges.
Support for Shanmugam is currently split across different reports. One account states he holds support letters from 34 MLAs [1], while another report indicates 36 newly elected MLAs are backing him against the leadership of Palaniswami [2].
Beyond the internal party struggle, there are indications of a broader political shift. Some reports suggest that approximately two-thirds of AIADMK MLAs are expected to back TVK leader Vijay during this split [1].
The conflict has centered on political hubs including Chennai and Coimbatore. While Palaniswami has focused on campaign promises, including a pledge to create a drug-free Tamil Nadu if voted to power, the internal challenge from Shanmugam persists.
“C. V. Shanmugam has leveled serious allegations against party General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami.”
The fragmentation of the AIADMK suggests a crisis of legitimacy for Edappadi K. Palaniswami. If a majority of the party's MLAs migrate toward C. V. Shanmugam or align with the TVK under Vijay, the AIADMK could face a permanent schism, fundamentally altering the opposition landscape in Tamil Nadu.
