The AIADMK party is facing a leadership revolt as senior officials attempt to replace party leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) following recent electoral losses.
This internal turmoil threatens the stability of the party in Tamil Nadu, as the struggle for control could fracture the legislative bloc and weaken the party's position as a political force in the state.
Senior leaders, including SP Velumani and CV Shanmugam, have begun rallying members of the legislative assembly to challenge the authority of EPS. The unrest stems from a series of four consecutive electoral defeats suffered by the AIADMK [1]. These losses have fueled doubts among party ranks regarding the leadership's ability to maintain a majority of support among the MLAs.
The divide was physically evident during a recent gathering at the State Assembly. Newly elected AIADMK MLAs arrived in two separate groups [2], a sign of the deepening split between the loyalists of EPS and those supporting the dissident faction led by Velumani and Shanmugam.
While EPS has maintained his position, the mobilization of MLAs suggests a coordinated effort to force a leadership change. The party now faces a critical juncture where the internal power struggle may overshadow its efforts to recover from the poll losses. The dissidents said that a change in leadership is necessary to prevent further decline in the party's voter base.

The conflict within the AIADMK reflects a broader struggle to redefine the party's identity and strategy after a period of sustained electoral decline. If the dissident faction successfully mobilizes enough MLAs to oust EPS, it could lead to a formal split in the party, potentially altering the balance of power in the Tamil Nadu State Assembly and creating new opportunities for political rivals.
