Four AIADMK members of the Legislative Assembly have resigned from their seats to join Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s TVK faction [2].
The mass departure signals a deepening crisis for AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami, as the party struggles to maintain unity following its defeat in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
Initially, three MLAs submitted their resignation letters to Assembly Speaker J. C. D. Prabhakar at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat [1, 3]. These members included Maragatham Kumaravel of Madurantakam, Sathyabama of Dharapuram, and Jayakumar of Perundurai [3]. A fourth MLA resigned the following day, bringing the total number of departures to four [4].
The exodus follows a series of internal fractures. Senior AIADMK leaders C. V. Shanmugam and S. P. Velumani have aligned themselves with the ruling coalition [1, 2]. This shift has created a significant divide within the party ranks, with 36 MLAs reportedly supporting Shanmugam against Palaniswami [1].
Chief Minister Vijay has already met with Shanmugam and Velumani to discuss the political transition [2]. The move by the rebel MLAs to join the TVK faction further weakens the opposition's presence in the assembly and consolidates the power of the ruling administration.
The party's instability is viewed as a consequence of the 2026 election loss, which triggered a struggle for leadership and a realignment of power within the state's political landscape [1, 2].
“Four AIADMK members of the Legislative Assembly have resigned from their seats to join Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s TVK faction.”
The shift of AIADMK legislators to the TVK faction suggests a fundamental realignment of the Tamil Nadu political landscape. By absorbing opposition members and forming alliances with senior AIADMK dissidents, Chief Minister Vijay is not only strengthening his legislative majority but also accelerating the fragmentation of the traditional opposition, potentially leaving the AIADMK unable to function as a cohesive political force.
