Three AIADMK legislators submitted their resignations to the Speaker of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly on Monday, May 20, 2024 [1, 2].
The resignations signal a deepening fracture within the party's leadership. The departing members are aligned with a faction that opposes the leadership of party chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami and supports the Tamiliga Vettri Kahagam (TVK) government [2, 3].
Among those who resigned are Maragatham Kumaravel, representing Maduranthakam-SC, and P. Sathyabama from Dharapuram-SC [1, 2]. A third unnamed MLA also submitted a resignation [1]. These members are linked to the C. Ve. Shanmugam and S. P. Velumani camp, which has grown critical of the current party direction [1, 2].
The resignations were formally submitted to Speaker J. C. D. Prabhakar [1]. This move follows a period of high tension within the party, where 25 MLAs from the Shanmugam-Velumani camp previously voted in favor of the TVK government during a confidence vote [1].
Despite these developments, some party members have attempted to project an image of unity. E. Subaya, an AIADMK MLA, said in an interview with ANI News on May 11, 2024, "Everything is smooth, there are no issues at all" [4].
However, the formal departure of these three members suggests a widening gap between the party's official leadership and the faction supporting the TVK government [2, 3]. The shift effectively moves the resigning members from the AIADMK to the TVK fold, altering the legislative balance in the assembly [2].

The exit of these legislators highlights a significant ideological and strategic split within the AIADMK. By aligning with the TVK government and formally resigning, the Shanmugam-Velumani faction is challenging Edappadi K. Palaniswami's control over the party. This attrition weakens the AIADMK's legislative strength while bolstering the position of Vijay's TVK, potentially shifting the political center of gravity in Tamil Nadu.
