The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) announced Wednesday that it will not support actor-politician Vijay in forming the Tamil Nadu government.
This decision creates a significant hurdle for Vijay and his Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party as they attempt to secure a governing majority in the state assembly. Without the support of established parties like AIADMK, the path to the chief minister's office becomes narrower.
The announcement followed a meeting held at the residence of former chief minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami (AIADMK) [1]. Party leadership said that the decision to withhold support from TVK is absolute and will be maintained under any circumstances [2].
Currently, the TVK has won 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly [3]. This total leaves the party short of the 118 seats required to reach the majority mark [4]. To form a government, Vijay must secure additional support from other parties or independent lawmakers to bridge the 10-seat gap.
The AIADMK's refusal to enter a coalition suggests a strategic move to keep the TVK isolated during the government formation process. This development comes as other political entities weigh their options in the wake of the election results.
The governor has previously indicated that the party seeking to form the government must demonstrate the support of at least 118 MLAs [4]. With AIADMK ruling out a partnership, the TVK must now look toward other potential allies to avoid a political deadlock in the state.
“AIADMK announced it will not support actor-politician Vijay in forming the Tamil Nadu government.”
The AIADMK's refusal to partner with TVK reinforces the difficulty of new political entrants challenging established power structures in Tamil Nadu. By denying Vijay the necessary seats to reach the 118-member threshold, AIADMK is leveraging its position to either force a different coalition or prevent a TVK-led government from taking power.
