An international team of researchers published the study in Nature Health, analyzing data from 952 locations across 34 countries [1, 2]. The researchers examined 109 million cancer cases [1] over two decades of data spanning approximately 2000 to 2020 [1].
The study focused on fine particulate matter, known as PM2.5, and nitrogen dioxide, or NO2 [1]. While air pollution is traditionally linked to respiratory illness, this analysis found that exposure to these specific pollutants is associated with an increased incidence of breast, thyroid, prostate, colon, and kidney cancers [1].
"Our findings suggest that air pollution contributes to a substantial burden of non-lung cancers worldwide," the lead author of the Nature Health study said [1].
The research team aimed to quantify the broader cancer burden attributable to ambient air pollutants to inform public-health policy [1]. By looking beyond lung disease, the study highlights how pollutants enter the bloodstream and affect distant organs.
