Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav has rejected claims that his party is facing an internal split ahead of the 2027 [1] Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
The dispute centers on whether the primary opposition party in the state is fracturing under pressure from corruption cases and potential defections to the BJP. If the party splits, it could significantly alter the electoral landscape and the opposition's ability to challenge the current administration in the upcoming polls.
Om Prakash Rajbhar, a minister in Uttar Pradesh, said the Samajwadi Party is heading towards a major split ahead of the 2027 [1] Assembly elections. Rajbhar said that internal pressures are mounting within the party organization.
Akhilesh Yadav countered these assertions during a press conference in Lucknow. He dismissed the reports as false and sent a message to his party workers, saying, "Jo darr gaya, wohi bhagwan se dar gaya."
Other government officials have provided conflicting accounts of the situation. Dinesh Pratap Singh, also a minister in Uttar Pradesh, said he has no knowledge of any split in the Samajwadi Party.
Adding to the political friction, Tej Pratap Yadav, the founder of Janshakti Janta Dal, said in May 2026 [2] that he would not support Akhilesh Yadav. He said that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath would return to power after the 2027 [1] polls.
The conflicting narratives emerged throughout May 2026 [2], sparking a wider political debate across the state. While some officials argue that the party is disintegrating, the Samajwadi Party leadership maintains that it remains unified, and focused on the 2027 [1] electoral cycle.
“"Samajwadi Party is heading towards a major split ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections."”
The conflicting claims regarding the Samajwadi Party's stability highlight the psychological warfare typical of the lead-up to major Indian state elections. By suggesting a split, rivals aim to demoralize party workers and signal an inevitable victory for the ruling party. Conversely, the firm denial from leadership is an attempt to project strength and stability to the electorate ahead of the 2027 contest.
