Engr. Emmanuel Inyang, chairman of Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, disbursed N34 million [1] in bursary grants to indigent students this week.
The initiative aims to reduce the financial barriers facing students in tertiary institutions, ensuring that poverty does not prevent academic completion in Akwa Ibom State.
Approximately 580 students [1] received the funding to support their studies in various institutions across Nigeria. The grants are specifically targeted at indigent learners who require financial assistance to maintain their enrollment and cover educational costs.
Inyang said the disbursement is part of a broader effort to support the youth of Mkpat Enin. By providing these funds, the local government intends to foster a more educated workforce within the region, a move seen as a critical investment in local human capital.
Local government officials said the bursaries are intended to alleviate the burden of tuition and living expenses. The distribution of the N34 million [1] ensures that a significant number of students can continue their degrees without the immediate threat of dropout due to lack of funds.
This program targets students across multiple tertiary levels, recognizing that the cost of higher education remains a primary obstacle for many families in the area. The administration of Mkpat Enin has prioritized these grants to ensure equitable access to education for those from lower-income backgrounds.
“Engr. Emmanuel Inyang disbursed N34 million in bursary grants to about 580 indigent students.”
This disbursement reflects a localized strategy to combat the rising costs of higher education in Nigeria. By utilizing local government funds to provide direct bursaries, Mkpat Enin is attempting to prevent a 'brain drain' or academic attrition caused by economic instability, potentially increasing the long-term professional capacity of the local population.
